Get To Know Your Hair
The first step to achieving perfection with your locks is to identify your hair type. You can apply all the products in the world, but if they’re not ones designed for your hair type, then they may be doing little to combat the issue at hand. Not one person’s hair is the same, and what may work for one client may not work for another, so finding out not only what products work best for your hair and scalp, but also what you wish to achieve can have a significant impact.
Seeing as there are a range of different hair types, we have pieced together advice and top tips for you to care for the two most problematic hair types; frizzy and curly. If you are unsure about what your hair type is, then you can find guidance on how to find out on Function of Beauty.
Frizzy Hair
Frizzy hair can be one of the most annoying types, as no matter whether you leave it natural or use heated tools to straighten it down, it can feel like the frizz just never goes away. The first step to softening your frizzy hair is to discover whether you have naturally frizzy hair, or is something causing the issue. For example, the three main causes of frizzy hair are:
- Humidity – excess moisture in the air means that there are high levels of hydrogen. Annoyingly, human hair is extremely sensitive to hydrogen, and when it connects with our hairs water molecules and protein, it goes a little wild.
- Dry Hair – when your hair is dry, it requires a lot of moisturising, and if left, it can cause frizzing to occur. You may find that humidity enhances this even more!
- Damaged Hair – if you have ever bleached your hair or experienced a bad box dying session at home, then you will be all too familiar with frizzy hair from damage. This can also be caused by overheating your hair, as the hair becomes dry in texture and lacks moisture.
Luckily, there are a few ways you can tame your frizzy hair, and all you will need to do is make sure that you have all the right products ready for washing and protecting those luscious locks. The first thing to look out for is sulphate, which is damaging to your hair as it strips it from natural oils and moisture, only making a bad situation even worse! Try your best to find products, particularly shampoos that are sulphate-free. Along with this, oil is going to be your best friend, and we would highly recommend investing in some argan oil or coconut oil products to apply to your hair after washing. If your hair is heat or bleach damaged, then we would suggest applying a good layer of oil onto the hair the night before hair wash day to allow it to soak in as much nutrients as possible.
Curly Hair
Everyone envy’s those with curly hair, but it can take a lot of looking after to ensure that those curls stay in place in-between hair washes. Far too often you will find that your curls become frizzy or they lose their shape, resulting in your washing your hair earlier than it needs to be, putting heat on to resolve the issue or sticking up in a rather messy bun.
The products that you use will have a dramatic impact on how your curls look and stay, so we would always advise clients to look into the products that they are using before applying them. For example, there are now tones of shampoos and conditioners that have been designed specifically with curly hair in mind. It is always best to go for those with argan oil in it, as it will ensure that your curls do not come out frizzy. Much like frizzy hair, you should also invest in some oil, and if you find that your start to lose your curls, then pour a pea-sized amount into your hair and apply to the ends of your hair.
Wash Your Hair The Right Way
There is nothing quite as nice as walking out of the hairdressers with your freshly washed silky hair that can shine for days. But have you noticed that your hairdresser isn’t doing anything special to your hair compared to what you would usually do at home? That’s because it’s all about the products you use and the way you wash your hair.
It may come as a surprise, but the way in which you wash your hair can impact the results, so it is important to make sure that you master your technique if you are going to walk out the house with perfect locks every time. The first thing you will need to do is go out and buy yourself a range of high-quality and professional products; these products tend to last a lot longer, and your hair is sure to thank you for it! Remember to pick up the following products:
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Oils/Serums
- Heat Protector
- Shine Sprays
Once you have treated yourself to a range of products, pop the shower on, making sure that it is not too hot. When water is too hot, it can damage your hair, and is particularly damaging to those with heat or bleach damaged hair as it will further strip your hair of its natural oils. The colder temperature will help to lock in the nutrients, so if you find it hard to take a cool shower, always finish off washing your hair with a cold rinse to close those pores. When washing your hair, try to apply shampoo only to the roots and your scalp and apply conditioner to the ends of your hair; this will remove excess oil without damaging the ends. Once you have washed your hair it is important to make sure that you apply products to protect your hair, Jessica says:
“Always use heat protector, can’t stress that enough! It’s like floss at the dentist; people tell me that their using it when they aren’t and then wonder why their hair is fried or damaged.”
Invest In A Silk Pillowcase
A small yet effective investment that you can make for your hair is purchasing yourself a silk pillow. While it may sound like it does little to help, silk pillows are ideal for those that have frizzy hair or damaged ends. With your usual cotton or polyester pillow, your hair is subject to friction as to you toss and turn during the night. However, with a silk pillow, your hair glides along with the material, giving you the perfect beauty sleep while minimising the risk of a frizz ball when you wake up in the morning. You can find a whole selection of silk pillows and sets on Lily Silk!
Prepare Your Hair The Night Before
We’re all guilty of hitting that snooze button one too many times only to find ourselves having to get ready for a day of work in under 10 minutes. Thankfully, you can minimise your morning stress by completely taking out your hair routine. There are several hairstyles that can actually be created the night before, providing you with not only stunning locks but the opportunity to repair your hair by going completely heatless!
If you love curling your hair and creating that effortless wave with your straighteners or hair curler, then you’ll be pleased to know that you can create the same look overnight. These methods include loosely plaiting your hair, using flexible rollers and even socks, all of which will only take a few minutes to create before going to bed and only require you to let down in the morning, or even in the car before heading into the office. You can find out more about the various different heatless curling methods by taking a look at our previous article. Alternatively, why not book in at our hair salon in Milton Keynes to restyle your hair and speak with the team about how you can prepare your hair the night before a big day out or a lazy day in.
Regularly Treat Your Hair
Much like you would pop on a face mask after a long week, you should also to the same with your hair every now and then. Whether it is once or twice a week, we would always recommend that you pop in a hair mask or treatment to keep your hair looking and feeling good. There are multiple benefits to treating your hair to a nourishing hair mask, such as:
- Makes hair look shiny
- Eliminates frizz
- Adds moisture
- Reduces breakage
- Promotes a healthy scalp
Regardless of your hair type, deep conditioners will always be beneficial when trying to keep it looking and feeling healthy, as well as getting rid of that stubborn frizz. Our hairstylist, Jessica, always tells clients:
“Make sure you do a conditioning treatment at least once a week and depending on your hair growth get small trims every 6-8 weeks to keep it in tip top condition.”
